Help Your Dog Beat the Summer Heat
Written by Administrator Sunday, 28 June 2009 04:43
Summer can be a great time for outdoor entertainment. However, there are those weeks during the summer ware the temperatures get a bit too high for neither man nor beast. When the temps start approaching the 90’s, many head for the air condition. However, dogs still need exercise regardless of the temperature.
If you don’t have a clean lake or pond nearby, finding cooler grounds can be tough. Moreover, many local lakes and ponds are infected with bacteria that can harm your dog or cause ear infections. Check with your local DNR before taking your dog to a local lake or pond.

There are several options for those who don’t have lakes, ponds, or pools nearby. The first option is to run the sprinkler. If you water your lawn, this can serve a double purpose. The dogs get wet and cool and your lawn gets watered. However, for some this can be an expensive option for some people.

Jenny and I have found a nice alternative to running the sprinkler that is affordable. Using a small kiddie pool can be a great way to let your dogs run outside in the heat without overheating. You’ll want to get a plastic or poly pool so they don’t puncture. Generally, you can find these pools for around ten dollars. The best part is that once it’s filled up, you can have hours of fun without running the water. Moreover, your dogs will enjoy splashing around. Throw a few of your dogs favorite toys in the pool and you have a new type of fetch. You’ll find your dogs will take a splash in the pool intermittently, while spending some time running after they’ve cooled off a bit.
So don’t forget that although it’s hot outside, your dogs still need to get out and run. In the meantime you can wonder off to shadier grounds and watch. It's cheap entertainment for both you and your dogs.
