It’s often said that dogs don’t talk. Granted, they don’t speak in human like words, but they do communicate effectively. For example, you’ll know when your dog needs to go out, when it’s time to eat, or when it’s time to play. Then there is the bark of someone or another dog outside. The whine for a toy stuck under the furniture. Of course there are other obvious ways for dogs to communicate.

We all know when they are happy to see us. That wagging tail is a dead ringer for “Man I’m glad to see you.”

I’m not mentioning every way dogs communicate with humans, because that’s not the point of this article. How do we truly know our dogs are happy? A wagging tail just means they are happy to see us, which really has no relation to your dog’s true happiness. All too often people mistake that enthusiasm for being a good owner. Unfortunately, dogs don’t have a high standard for being happy to see someone. This holds even truer for Golden Retrievers. Everyone is a new friend to a Golden.

If you really want to know if you are a good dog owner, then a dogs dream can tell you all you need to know. How so? Dogs are adventurous and playful by nature; whether it’s a walk in the park, a splash in the pool, or even just a ride in the car. Any one of these activities can spark a good dog dream. The murmur of a faint bark, paws or legs moving as if running in their sleep, lips moving as if they’re carrying their favorite toy. It’s as if you can see them running in their sleep with a big smile on their face as if to say “Man I’m having a great day.”

I’m not saying this is the only way to know if your dog is truly happy, but it’s certainly one great indicator. Any time our dogs have had an exciting day, we can almost predict a good dog dream. A good dog dream, mean’s we’ve given them something to dream about. That is when you know you’ve done your job as a dog owner.
